Tom Morello: “Jane’s Addiction Changed Music, Not Nirvana”

Tuesday, 07 June 2011 Written by James Conlon

Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello has sung the praises of Jane’s Addiction, claiming that it was them, not Nirvana, that led "rock out of the hair metal wilderness of the '80s".

The guitarist made a speech during Jane Addiction’s induction into the Guitar Center RockWalk in Hollywood last week. Speaking about their musical legacy, Morello said of the band: "Nirvana often gets credit for being the first 'alternative' band to break through, the band that changed music. That's just not true. It was Jane's Addiction: inspiring, intelligent, furiously rocking and artistically deep."

Jane's Addiction singer Perry Farrell was clearly moved by the speech, as according to Pulse Of Radio he reacted by saying: "That speech made me sound so damn good, I don't need to look in the mirror ever again. Just play that over and over every morning."

You can watch a fan’s video of Morello’s speech here:

Meanwhile, the likes of Gibson are claiming that Rage Against The Machine may be set to do something big for their 20th anniversary later this year. Although the Christmas Number One's only have one date scheduled at present (alongside Muse, Rise Against and Lauryn Hill), the recent completion of Morello’s latest solo effort could mean that there is something major in the pipeworks.
