U2 have confirmed that they will be releasing a deluxe edition of their classic album 'Achtung Baby' to mark the 20th anniversary of the LP’s original release. According to Rolling Stone, the new edition will feature a large selection of unseen footage and rare alternate versions of hits from the record.
Speaking about the additional content, guitarist The Edge said: "There's some very interesting alternative versions that we discovered of songs that wouldn't have seen the light of day." He continued to describe some of the alternate version as being "like 'Achtung Baby' out of focus."
The band’s manager Paul McGuinness, however, seemed to be taking a far less sentimental approach to the re-release, discussing the commercial value of a deluxe edition. He said: "If you pile a lot of extra mateial and packaging and design work into a super-duper box set, there are people who will pay quite a lot for it, so you can budget it at a very high level and pump up the value."
The Irish four-piece, who are set to play their long-awaited headline slot at Glastonbury Festival tonight, have also claimed they will be working on an app for the iPad and iPod to link in with the 20th anniversary of the release.
U2 UK & Ireland Tour Dates are as follows:
Sat September 24th 2011 - O2 Academy2 Sheffield, Sheffield
Fri October 28th 2011 - York Duchess, York
