Korn 'Were Dubstep Before There Was Dubstep', Says Frontman Jonathan Davis

Nu-metal pioneers Korn, who are now crossing over to the realms of electronic production and dubstep, are unhappy at fans who won’t accept their new style and sound – saying that they were a dubstep band even ‘before there was dubstep’.

Korn have new album ‘The Path of Totality’ out on December 5th, and have been promoting singles from the LP recently – including their track ‘Get Up’ with Skrillex. Unsurprisingly, hardcore Korn fans who fell in love with the grungy, deep sound of nu-metal that the band pioneered and defined weren’t happy at the new brosteppy sound.

But, in reply to the claims about their music, frontman Jonathan Davis has hit out at the unhappy fans – claiming that they’ve always been a bass-loving dubstep-esque band.

“We were dubstep before there was dubstep,” Davis claimed. “Tempos at 140 with half-time drums, huge bassed-out riffs. We used to bring out 120 subwoofers and line them across the whole front of the stage, 60 subs per side. We were all about the bass.

“These kids are onto something completely innovative and new. It's pure and awesome and underground and heavy and different, not like stale-ass metal and rock'n'roll. I love them all, but the old-school metalheads are not open to change.”

And, after already helping pioneer nu-metal, Davis has said that he’s proud he’s managed to help create and define another genre: the fusion of metal and dance.

“It's really cool to see glow sticks at the show, to see dance music culture infiltrating and becoming one with the metal community. At the last show, there was one mosh pit where they were moshing, and another with kids doing glow stick tricks. They were taking turns and shit. I think we've opened up a new style that both sides are happy with.”
