Mumford And Sons Reveal Comments About Their New Album Being 'Doom-Folk' Were A Joke

London-based four-piece Mumford and Sons and rubbished rumours that their currently untitled new album will ‘doom-folk’.

The band have been working on their sophomore album, the follow-up to 2009’s ‘Sigh No More’, since early 2011 - and planned to release it later that year. Though they’ve played out a lot of the new tracks from the record, they told press in an interview it would be a bit longer before it hit shelves – with bassist Ted Dwayne telling The Rolling Stone: It’s doom folk, kind of like Black Sabbath meets Nick Drake.”

But now, vocalist Marcus Mumford has revealed that the comment was simply a joke – and that it was simply an American journalist not understanding his sarcasm that lead to the reports that they’d be changing up their folk-rock style.

Mumford told NME: “That was a joke to an American journalist who didn't understand the concept of sarcasm. I called Ted [Dwayne] and was like, 'Ted, what have you done? We spent our whole first album trying to avoid being pigeonholed!'”

He added that the new album would be more of an ‘evolution, not a revolution’ – saying: “We don't want to put that added pressure on ourselves. Everyone's just letting us get on with it. The only people that have heard it are [producer Markus] Dravs, our manager and us. No-one else has been involved in the process – so it means that we might have completely fucked it up…!”

Mumford and Sons will be playing at Scotland’s RockNess Festival this June, alongside Ed Sheeran and Biffy Clyro.
