Man The Machetes - Idiokrati (Album Review)

In the style of Kvelertak come Man the Machetes, another bunch of rowdy Norwegians who come armed with more tunes than is healthy for debut albums and, so I have been told, dynamite live shows. In just a couple of years the quintet have already started to make waves, having already played major festivals and gained some sought after radio airplay in their home nation.

ImageNot that such pedestrian biographical detail can really prepare one for the onslaught that is 'Idiokrati'. Rarely do a band spring on to the scene with as much vitriolic energy as this. It’s all in Norwegian so I can’t pretend to have a clue what is going on but frontman Christopher Iversen sounds mighty pissed off about something. Over the course of the ten tracks here (which don’t even make half an hour in total) we get plenty of rollocking metal riffs matched with the dynamic interplay of post-hardcore, creating a whole that not only batters the ears but also has the tendency to widen the eyes a little as well. Highlights are hard to pick out but opener 'Sluk Des Rått' is a razor sharp introduction to the band’s chaotic, but melodic, sound. It’s like being locked in a small room with the world’s foremost cage fighter, who sings glorious tunes whilst he smashes you into submission.

There’s not much else to say. 'Idiokrati' is a record tailor made for those who enjoy a little bit of genuine aggressive feeling in their music without the exclusion of top quality hooks. Fans of Cancer Bats and Kvelertak may be most obviously lulled in by Man the Machetes but really one suspects that this band are too good to be confined by such descriptions. It’s time to start salivating over their next record already...

'Idiokrati' is out now via Indie Recordings.
