Moya - A Little More Love (Single Review)

After last year’s amazingly successful single ‘Making Me Fall’ spent three weeks on the BBC Radio 2 A-list, Moya’s back with her new single ‘A Little More Love.’ It’s a self-confessed changed of direction, and Moya describes her new single as "a bit of a transition…with this single I wanted to incorporate the kind of music that I listen to. I think it’s important to keep my sound current."

ImageWhereas ‘Making Me Fall’ was a delicious, catchy, radio-ready slice of pop paradise, ‘A Little More Love’ is a more grown up effort with a far-reaching message. The accompanying music video features members of Manchester and London’s homeless community. Moya explains, "the main sentiment is that money doesn’t make you a better person. What people need more than anything is love, respect and attention, and all the money in the world can’t replace that."

If you’re a slightly cynical sort, shots of laughing homeless people on rainy streets might seem a little... mawkish, but the video is a testament to the youthful idealism of Moya’s lyrics, and her message of love, respect and attention is an admirable one in today’s often shallow pop industry. Cynicism fades away once you notice that the video has received over half a million hits on YouTube, and that one of the top comments is trying to stir people up into volunteering for their local homeless shelters.

The song itself is gorgeous, as Moya’s songs tend to be, opening with a simple piano melody and then building with the pulsing of synths. Moya’s voice is perfect, rising from a whisper to a whimper until finally her voice gains the confidence to take control, but the song never fully becomes the full-bodied dance-track you expect it to be. “You think is going to go somewhere but it doesn’t”, Moya says. “But that’s what I like about it.”

‘A Little More Love’ is out now.
