Gentleman's Dub Club - Give It Away (Single Review)

Tuesday, 30 July 2013 Written by Charlie Hurt

With festival season well and truly upon us, it seems the right time for Gentleman's Dub Club to release their latest single. 'Give It Away' is another taste of the band's forthcoming debut album, 'Forty Four', which is due out this autumn.

The collective's two previous EPs both troubled the UK reggae charts and with support from the likes of Rob Da Bank, Don Letts and David Rodigan, the album should receive plenty of attention.

Give It Away is a deep and dubby piece of dance music that is destined for soundsystems and, once again, the reggae charts. The brass section takes a step back in this one, with a more electronic sound captured by some full-bodied production - unlike the bedroom studio we see in the accompanying video.

A succulent synth starts the track, before the bass kicks in and images of thudding speakers form in your mind. Frontman Jonathan Scratchley sings: 'This is my time, can't give it away'. It must feel like that for the band right now, certainly whenever they step on stage in front of a frenzied crowd.

This one will fit the live set perfectly. It's easy to picture a crowd cheering as the track drops, and again when it finishes with an anthemic chant. It demands to be played loud and if you haven't seen this nine piece live, you'll want to after this. Luckily, they're playing various dates and festivals throughout the summer.

The single also includes a remix by Toby Davies, or Planas, for anyone who needs the track dipped in a house and techno flavouring.
