Michael Jackson's Family Lose Negligence Case Against AEG Live

Thursday, 03 October 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

The family of late pop superstar Michael Jackson have lost their negligence case against AEG Live, with a jury deciding that the concert promoters had not been negligent in hiring Dr. Conrad Murray to treat the singer.

The Jacksons had hoped to win significant damages after bringing the case forward, while AEG argued that they had hired Murray - who was previously jailed for four years for involuntary manslaughter following Jackson's death - following a request from the star.

The jury found that Murray was not 'unfit or incompetent', although in delivering their verdict, foreman Gregg Barden said: "That doesn't mean we felt he was ethical."

Despite the loss, the family and their lawyer Kevin Boyle claimed that they have ‘proved some important things’, both for themselves and the concert industry in general. According to the BBC, Boyle said outside court:

“We think what we've done with this case is proved some things that are important for the Jackson family and for the concert industry and the sports industry with regard to treatment by doctors.”

He added that the case was far from over - stating:

"We, of course, are not happy with the result as it stands now, we will be exploring all options - legally and factually - and make a decision about anything at a later time.”
