Former Lostprophets Frontman Ian Watkins Pleads Guilty To Child Sex Offences

Tuesday, 26 November 2013 Written by Huw Baines

Ian Watkins, former frontman of Lostprophets, has pleaded guilty to a string of child sex offences, including attempting to rape a baby.

The 36-year-old, of Pontypridd, changed his plea when appearing before Cardiff Crown Court, having “furiously denied” the charges in a statement released earlier this year. The BBC reports that he pleaded guilty to attempted rape and sexual assault of a child under 13, but denied rape.

Watkins subsequently admitted further offences and will be sentenced on December 18. His co-accused, two women who cannot be named for legal reasons, also pleaded guilty to a number of charges.

The prosecutor, Chris Clee QC, told the court: "Ian Watkins was the lead singer in a successful band called the Lostprophets. He accepts he was a determined and committed paedophile."

He continued: "Both women sexually abused their own children and made them available to Watkins for him to abuse."

The remaining members of Lostprophets confirmed their split in October. They said: “After nearly a year of coming to terms with our heartache, we finally feel ready to announce publicly what we have thought privately for some time. We can no longer continue making or performing music as Lostprophets.”
