Slipknot are in the studio working on new material, according to an image posted online by the band's guitarist, Jim Root.
The Instagram picture came with the hashtag #slipknot2014 and arrives in the wake of Joey Jordison's departure from the band.
The drummer, who has recorded on each of their studio records, released a statement to Metal Hammer magazine earlier this month addressing his abrupt exit. He said:
"To my fans, friends, and associates… I would like to start the New Year by addressing the recent rumours and speculation regarding my departure from Slipknot. I want to make it very clear that I DID NOT QUIT SLIPKNOT. This band has been my life for the last 18 years, and I would never abandon it, or my fans."
