Miguel - Wildheart (Album Review)

Monday, 29 June 2015 Written by Milly McMahon

Miguel writes intensely sexual music. Daring to explore lyrical nether regions intimate enough to make even Drake’s thighs tremble, dark lust and explicit passions fuel ‘Wildheart’, his third album.

Reinterpreting classic influences from Prince and D’Angelo, with glimpses of Mariah Carey blended in with titillating intent, the fundamental content of ‘Wildheart’ is almost incomparable to any artist currently doing the rounds, such is its unique power.

Recounting stirring, climax-ridden stories of obsession and besotted by beauty, his latest pushes the downtempo R&B of ‘Kaleidoscope Dream’ into faster hip-hop rhythms throughout, with Kurupt and Lenny Kravitz jumping on at certain points in proceedings.

Layered, atmospheric and experimental in its production, Flesh demonstrates Miguel’s poetic lyrical capabilities over a charged, intricately built instrumental. Constructed and arranged to mesmerise his audience, it shines a light on the intensity of his talent.

‘Wildheart’ also finds Miguel personalising his material more intimately than ever before. He discusses identity issues on What’s Normal Anyway and channels experiences from each of his 29 years into defying any expectations we might have had for more of his previously defined, and massively popular, style.

Building crescendos to orgasmic heights, the album progresses with insight into his deepest emotional moments. The closing statement, Face The Sun, is an epic, guitar-led anthem strong enough to challenge the finest songwriters of this generation. A brave and original album, ‘Wildheart’ travels in various stylistic directions, all of which eventually lead to the same end point: a rare, intangible brilliance.
