Bay City Rollers Founder Alan Longmuir Dies Aged 70

Monday, 02 July 2018 Written by Huw Baines

Alan Longmuir, a founding member of the Bay City Rollers, has died aged 70.

Longmuir (pictured middle) played bass with the band, who rose to fame during the ‘70s thanks to hits like Bye Bye Baby and Shang-a-Lang. His bandmate, Les McKeown, posted a tribute that read:

“The original Bay City Roller. Alan passed away at 06.00hrs today Monday 2nd of July surrounded by his family and friends.”

Born in Edinburgh, Longmuir formed the band (initially as the Saxons) with his younger brother, Derek, in the mid ‘60s. He left in 1976, causing an outcry among the Rollers’ fanbase. In 2015, meanwhile, Longmuir, McKeown and Stuart Wood reformed for several shows.

Writing on Twitter, Wood said: "Very sad to read in the paper that Alan has passed away...I'll remember the good times we had for over 40 years...RIP Al"
