Paul Simon Announces 'In The Blue Light' Album

Thursday, 12 July 2018 Written by Huw Baines

Paul Simon will accompany his final tour dates with a new album that revisits cuts from across his storied career.

‘In The Blue Light’ is out on September 7 and will feature fresh takes and new arrangements of songs from ‘There Goes Rhymin' Simon’, ‘Still Crazy After All These Years’, ‘One-Trick Pony’, ‘Hearts and Bone’, ‘The Rhythm of The Saints’, ‘You're The One’ and ‘So Beautiful Or So What’.

“This album consists of songs that I thought were almost right, or were odd enough to be overlooked the first time around,” Simon said in a statement. “Re-doing arrangements, harmonic structures, and lyrics that didn’t make their meaning clear, gave me time to clarify in my own head what I wanted to say, or realize what I was thinking and make it more easily understood.”

Among his collaborators on the record were producer Roy Halee, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, guitarist Bill Frisell, and drummers Jack DeJohnette and Steve Gadd. The National’s Bryce Dessner, meanwhile, arranged Can't Run But.

Simon’s Homeward Bound farewell tour will wind down in September, with his last show set to take place at Flushing Meadows' Corona Park in New York.

While Paul Simon may not be as prolific as Bob Dylan (38 solo albums) or Van Morrison (39), he might beat both artists in terms of consistent quality. Records like ‘Rhythm of the Saints’, released in 1990, and 2016’ s ‘Surprise’ often matched the brilliance of his work with Art Garfunkel, but may have been overlooked due to ageism within pop music.

Photo: Shelly Mosman It’s not often that an album comes along and bowls you over into a state of sheer stupefaction. The Minnesota trio Low have always dabbled in minimalist experimentation, but their 12th full-length offering, ‘Double Negative’, cranks things up a notch. With Bon Iver producer B.J. Burton once again on hand, they manage to accomplish a giant leap forward without ever losing sight of who they are.
