The Velvet Underground To Release 'The Complete Matrix Tapes' Vinyl Box Set

Monday, 01 July 2019 Written by Jon Stickler

The Velvet Underground will have their collection of live recordings, 'The Complete Matrix Tapes', released on vinyl for the first time on July 12.

Made up entirely of performances from the legendary band's 1969 residency at San Francisco's the Matrix, the limited edition eight-LP box set captures highlights from two gigs during the 18-night run at the club owned by Jefferson Airplane's Marty Balin.

While much of the material was originally put out on the 'Complete Matrix Tapes' CD set in 2015, this forthcoming release marks the first time these versions are available on vinyl and compiles a total of 43 tracks, including nine that are previously unreleased. Head here for the full tracklist.

According to the band's website, the recordings were "mixed down directly from the original in-house multi-tracks, including the 18 tracks featured on a Super Deluxe Edition of the Velvets' third album."
