Madonna Embraces Legacy Of Batuque In Video For Batuka

Madonna has shared the video for Batuka from her new album.
The global phenomenon’s fifth LP, ‘Madame X’ saw a release in June, and will be accompanied by a huge tour of the same name in the US this year before hitting the UK and Europe in 2020.
The video is Inspired by batuque, a style of music created by women from Cape Verde, and highlights the genre's traditional music and dance celebrations by featuring the Orquestra Batukadeira. There is also an unsettling side to it, created by the looming threat of a storm, a reflection of the people's and genre's struggles as part of the slave trade. Madonna said:
We went to a tiny club in the middle of nowhere and a circle of women were sitting in chairs playing leather drums. The music started and they all took turns singing solos in Creole and dancing. It was so inspiring that I asked if possible, to collaborate with them. They agreed and we ended up in the studio recording “Batuka,” this call-and-response song, live. It was a religious experience, just a total celebration of life.
