Of Monsters and Men - Fever Dream (Album Review)

Monday, 29 July 2019 Written by Milly McMahon

Four years on from the release of the band’s sophomore album Of Monsters and Men are back with 'Fever Dream', an ambitious, sometimes anthemic album with foundations based on sweeping soundscapes and big choruses.

Here the Icelandic five-piece have challenged themselves to produce and write a collection of tracks unlike any music they have created before, with lead vocalist Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir setting aside her guitar in favour of songs based around vocals, loops and atmospherics.

Often composing the songs lyrically, then sampling vocals to inspire instrumentals and percussion, the progression of the band’s music is bold. Each of the album’s 11 tracks feel charged with melodrama and an ‘80s vibe that underpins the aesthetic of the music.

This approach works well on Waiting For The Snow and Alligator, where a sense of overwhelming vulnerability is palpable, and enhanced further by a defiant drive to overcome.

As the album progresses, though, songs like Sleepwalker and Soothsayer tirelessly cover old ground without finding the magic of old, thinning out the inspiration that initially sparked the LP in the process.

In their element Of Monsters and Men are a powerful act. Their debut album 'My Head Is An Animal' earned them incredible popularity, but the melodic harmonies that defined their early style have all but vanished on 'Fever Dream'.

The delicate, understated folk moods have morphed into indie-rock happenings and, even with the experimental shift in the LP’s writing process, they feel safe. Having already become an advertising staple, unfortunately ‘Fever Dream’ at times feels like a failed attempt at further commercial success.
