Real Estate - The Main Thing (Album Review)

Real Estate’s ruminative fifth album ‘The Main Thing’ drifts along like a daydream. Unravelling with a curated sort of nonchalance, it’s a soft focus slow dance that moves with elegance throughout its 14 tracks and 52 minutes.

Incorporating psychedelic guitar riffs and tempered drums, a curious and tentative state of mind is explored track by track. Conceptualised to inspire deep thought and conversation, here Real Estate have moved their happy-go-lucky sound along to help them investigate more complex, emotionally provocative territories.

Stand out track Also A But, the first Real Estate song written by the band's new guitarist Julian Lynch, is among the group’s most ambitious work to date. Bold and accomplished, its blended jazzy melodies feel genuinely intimate.

A decade into their career, the intention to compose a body of work that expressed a maturing sense of originality is clearly front and centre in the New Jersey guitar outfit’s mind. Silent Word serves as a change of aesthetic, with an angsty instrumental juxtaposed against bassist Alex Bleeker’s soothing vocals.

‘The Main Thing’ is a cathartic journey, saturated with a passion for making music together, and it demands to be unpicked over time. So much has been invested into its lyrics and moods that the way in which the music sits with the listener shapeshifts upon each play. Real Estate have returned to our airwaves exquisitely on point.
