Lana Del Rey Confirms Arrival Of New Album, Responds To Accusations Of Glamorising Abuse

Thursday, 21 May 2020 Written by Huw Baines

Lana Del Rey has announced the September 5 release of her new album in an Instagram statement that also addressed what she views as double standards in the music industry over accusations that she "glamorises abuse".

In the note, which was posted early on May 21, she wrote of being “crucified” for documenting abusive relationships before seeking to contrast her experiences with those of other female artists, largely women of colour. She said:

“Now that Doja Cat, Ariana [Grande], Camila [Cabello], Cardi B, Kehlani and Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé have had number ones with songs about being sexy, wearing no clothes, fucking, cheating etc – can I please go back to singing about being embodied, feeling beautiful by being in love even if the relationship is not perfect, or dancing for money – or whatever I want – without being crucified or saying that I’m glamourising abuse??????”

She added: “I’m fed up with female writers and alt singers saying that I glamorise abuse when in reality I’m just a glamorous person singing about the realities of what we are all now seeing are very prevalent abusive relationships all over the world.

“With all of the topics women are finally allowed to explore I just want to say over the last ten years I think it’s pathetic that my minor lyrical exploration detailing my sometimes submissive or passive roles in my relationships has often made people say I’ve set women back hundreds of years.”

Del Rey released ‘Norman Fucking Rockwell’ in 2019 and has been hinting at a follow up for some time. Last summer she told the Times that ‘White Hot Forever’ would be released in the next “12-13 months”.
