Mark Lanegan And Joe Cardamone Announce New Project Dark Mark Vs. Skeleton Joe

Wednesday, 21 October 2020 Written by Jon Stickler

Mark Lanegan and Joe Cardamone have confirmed details of a new project, Dark Mark vs. Skeleton Joe.

The former Screaming Trees leader has teamed with the former Icarus Line singer for a forthcoming collaborative album that will feature the newly shared introductory track Dark Mark Theme, and its b-side Skeleton Joe Manifesto.

The pair already have an entire LP ready but its release was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Ahead of the first single's March arrival via Rare Bird/Kitten Robot Records, check out a two-minute teaser of the haunting, dark-synth song below.

The project finds the prolific Lanegan reassuming his "Dark Mark" moniker, which he will also use to put out a Christmas record this December. It's also an introduction to Cardamone's alter ego. Speaking to Rolling Stone, he said:

"The project is called Dark Mark vs. Skeleton Joe because we both have assumed these alter egos over the years. The material we wanted to do together seemed to take well to the idea that our personas here are is if we're now outcasts to our own creative selves.

"Dark Mark Theme is one of my favorite tracks. The lyrics are awesome, and the instrumental component is just mean. Together, it all ended up as a powerful combination. Skeleton Joe Manifesto is a four-in-the-morning-in-the-Paris-underground type of track."

Lanegan added: "There is a full record. It’s done and in the can. We were originally intending to release it earlier, but, with the pandemic, and other things going on in the world, it just hasn’t seemed appropriate. Now, we both feel more comfortable creeping some of this material into the open, and these two tracks are just a teaser for what’s to come with the full length."

In the past year, Lanegan released the swift follow-up to 2019's 'Something's Knocking', 'Straight Songs Of Sorrow', a companion LP to his Sing Backwards and Weep memoir, while also quietly unleashing an EP as Black Phoebe, a joint offering with his wife Shelly Brien.
