Nick Murphy Announces Second Chet Faker Album 'Hotel Surrender', Posts New Track Whatever Tomorrow

Monday, 19 April 2021 Written by Jon Stickler

Nick Murphy has announced a new Chet Faker album.

Having revived the moniker in 2020 after six years, the Australian musician will release 'Hotel Surrender' on July 16 via his own label, Detail Records in partnership with BMG. He said:

"There were a lot of heavy perspective shifters for me. I really just thought of the music in a different light. I look at it as a mass therapy now. I think I used to see it as this plight, like I was on a crusade or this creative odyssey. Now I see that it’s more Shamanistic. You’ve got to find some light—or sometimes dark, whatever’s right—and share it. I realized that was the heart of the Chet Faker project. And I felt like the world was hurting, so I thought, 'I can do a small something to give people some joy.'"

The self-produced, self-penned LP will include the newly shared Whatever Tomorrow, as well as the previously unveiled cuts Low and Get High among its 10 tracks.

Following a spoken word introduction, the new single rolls out over electronic percussion with layered strings. Discussing it, Murphy added: "It's a rebellion to this idea that you have to wait for the things you need. It felt like we were being sold tomorrow and we were paying for today. I was saying, 'Fuck your tomorrow, we deserve our lives now.'"

It arrives with a self-directed music video, viewable below along with the record's artwork. The debut Chet Faker full-length was 2014's 'Built On Glass'. Murphy, meanwhile, dropped his first instrumental record, 'Music For Silence', in 2020.
