Mitski Announces Sixth Album 'Laurel Hell', Shares New Single The Only Heartbreaker

Mitski has shared details of her sixth studio album.
The follow-up to 2018's 'Be The Cowboy' is called 'Laurel Hell' and will arrive on February 4 via Dead Oceans. It was recorded with longtime producer Patrick Hyland during the isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Alongside the announcement, the American singer-songwriter has dropped the emotional track The Only Heartbreaker, which is driven by a dancey, '80s-inspired beat and synth melody. Co-written with Dan Wilson, it follows the previously unveiled first single, Working For The Knife, and comes paired with a surreal video co-directed by Maegan Houang and Jeff Desom.
In a statement, Mitski said that the song is about, "the person always messing up in the relationship, the designated Bad Guy who gets the blame. It could simply be about that, but I also wanted to depict something sadder beneath the surface, that maybe the reason you’re always the one making mistakes is because you’re the only one trying."
Commenting on the creative motivation behind the record, she added: "I needed love songs about real relationships that are not power struggles to be won or lost. I needed songs that could help me forgive both others and myself. I make mistakes all the time. I don't want to put on a front where I’m a role model, but I’m also not a bad person. I needed to create this space mostly for myself where I sat in that grey area."
In October, Mitski confirmed a 2022 tour, kicking off in North America, followed by UK and European dates in the spring, marking her first appearances over here since 2018. Tickets are on sale now.
