In a year when emo nostalgia has hit a heady peak—from the comebacks of My Chemical Romance and Paramore, to the excitement around When We Were Young festival’s throwback line up—it only seems right that we should be greeted by a supergroup such as L.S. Dunes.
The band comprises guitarist Frank Iero (My Chemical Romance), guitarist Travis Stever (Coheed and Cambria), vocalist Anthony Green (Circa Survive), bassist Tim Payne (Thursday), and drummer Tucker Rule (Thursday & Yellowcard), and boils those iconic roots into a glorious time capsule of raucous emo energy.
From the pensive splendour of album opener 2022 to the infectious energy of Bombsquad, ‘Past Lives’ runs the gamut of moves that took the genre to soaring heights in the late noughties.
It all culminates in album closer Sleep Cult, which is an anthemic gut punch that fans will cling to very quickly. Its cathartic, sombre chorus carries emotional depth with dramatic flair that has it ripe for a teary-eyed singalong.
For the most part, ‘Past Lives’ has L.S. Dunes doing exactly what you would expect. Having a vocalist as distinctive as Green on board ensures that swathes of the album sound like prime Circa Survive, while the gritty emotion of Thursday and the pace of Yellowcard come pouring through in waves.
There's also a welcome dash of My Chemical Romance's theatricality and Coheed & Cambria's proggy technical prowess. In short, this is the sum of its parts, and that's a very good thing indeed.
