Talib Kweli And Madlib Announce Joint Album 'Liberation 2', Share First Single After These Messages

Friday, 10 February 2023 Written by Jon Stickler

Talib Kweli and Madlib are reuniting for 'Liberation 2'.

Serving as a sequel to their 2007 record 'Liberation', the follow-up will arrive on March 6, and similarly to its predecessor will be available only as a download, this time exclusively on Luminary, the subscription podcast network that Black Star—Kweli and Yasiin Bey's project—put out 'No Fear Of Time' on. Kweli said in a statement:

"This album was written, recorded and mixed over 10 years. It's expansive in concept but tight in its substance and approach. People today are taking stock of what is most important – family, health, wellness, love."

"The materialism and debauchery that is stereotypically associated with hip hop has lost some of its luster," he continuned. "Madlib and I have been consistent in our messaging. Never has there been a better time for such honest, message-driven music that pays tribute to the sounds that came before us."

Kweli also explained that their partnership with Luminary gives him the right to, "retain ownership, allowing us to create an exclusive experience for listeners." He concluded: "I'm excited to be at the forefront of Luminary’s foray into the music space, and we have a chance to change the industry for the better with the release of this album."

To accompany the news, the frequent collaborators have shared the album's first single, After These Messages, which explores racism over Madlib's horn and piano instrumental. It features a contribution from Kweli's son Amani, while other tracks on the record include guest spots from the rapper's daughter, Diani, as well as Q-Tip, Wildchild, Roc Marciano, Westside Gunn, and a posthumous appearance from Mac Miller.
