Mark Knopfler Announces New Album 'One Deep River', Shares First Single Ahead Of The Game

Wednesday, 24 January 2024 Written by Jon Stickler

Mark Knopfler has announced a new album.

The follow-up to 2018’s 'Down The Road Wherever' is titled 'One Deep River' and will arrive on April 12 through the former Dire Straits vocalist and guitarist's own British Grove label via EMI.

Produced by the 74-year-old alongside his longtime collaborator Guy Fletcher, the LP was recorded at London's British Grove Studios with Knopfler leading alongside Jim Cox and Guy Fletcher on keyboards, Glenn Worf on bass, and Ian Thomas on drums.

Danny Cummings also features on percussion, Richard Bennett assists on guitar, Greg Leisz is on pedal and lap steel, while Mike McGoldrick plays whistle and uilleann pipes, and John McCusker plays fiddle. Emma and Tamsin Topolski contribute backing vocals.

Head below to check out the record's striking cover art, which features the iconic Tyne Bridge, that crosses the river that runs through Knopfler's childhood home city, Newcastle. He said:

"Crossing the Tyne is always on your mind. It’s what you were doing when you were leaving as a youngster and that feeling is always the same every time you do it. You’re heading out or you’re coming back, and it just connects with your childhood. The power of it doesn’t go away."

As a preview, check out the record's first single, Ahead Of The Game, an upbeat acoustic track, guided by perceptive lyrics inspired by people, places and experiences a singer-songwriter has encountered in the struggle to make it.

'One Deep River' tracklist:

1. Two Pairs Of Hands
2. Ahead Of The Game
3. Smart Money
4. Scavengers Yard
5. Black Tie Jobs

7. Janine
