Fiona Apple Returns With First New Song In Five Years Pretrial (Let Her Go Home)

Wednesday, 07 May 2025 Written by Jon Stickler

Fiona Apple has shared her first new song in five years, Pretrial (Let Her Go Home)

Built on a backdrop of percussion and wind instruments, the powerful protest song finds the New York singer-songwriter tackling the difficulties women face from pre-trial imprisonment in the United States. Head below to view the song's accompanying video, which features footage shared by women who were jailed, despite being presumed innocent, because they're unable to afford bail.

Known for her activism and involvement in social justice causes, Apple has set up an accompanying Let Her Go Home website, which expands on the events that influenced the song. Such situations have been observed by Apple firsthand while she volunteered as a court watcher for over two years. She explained:

"I hope that this song, and the images shared with me, can help to show what is at stake when someone is kept in pretrial detention. I give this song in friendship and respect to all who have experienced the pain of pretrial detention and to the women of the group’s leadership who have taught me so much and whom I truly love."

It marks Apple's first new original music since the release of her 2020 album 'Fetch the Bolt Cutters'. She did, however, recently feature on Letter From An Unknown Girlfriend, a track from The Waterboys' new album, 'Life, Death And Dennis Hopper'.
