‘Metalhorse’ is the emotionally charged and sonically enriched third album from Billy Nomates, signifying a considerable transformation in Tor Maries’ creative approach. It is her first produced in a studio with a full band and was profoundly influenced by personal challenges, including the recent death of her father and her own diagnosis with MS.
Duly, there is raw emotional depth to the album, offering a sense of catharsis as Maries channels these experiences into a loose framework inspired by imagery of a crumbling amusement park, which serves as a metaphor for the unpredictable nature of life.
‘Metalhorse’ is deeper and more textured, broadening Maries’ musical horizons after her breakthrough with a more minimalist palette.
The title track immediately signals this shift with its unexpected bluesy undertones but, crucially, the record as a whole retains the unvarnished, authentic charm that has helped her cultivate a fiercely loyal following.
Tracks like Nothin’ Worth Winnin’ stand out for their intense personal resonance, skillfully blend drum machines and swirling synths with Maries’ bare-bones honesty into something haunting yet relatable. The lead single, The Test, has a gothic intensity about it, combining dark, atmospheric elements with compelling storytelling.
Notably, Dark Horse Friend features a guest appearance from Hugh Cornwell, formerly of The Stranglers and an artist deeply admired by Maries’ late father. It’s a connection that helps the song become a heartfelt tribute, making it a standout moment.
Despite its moments of experimentation, such as the vibrant throwback synth-pop of Override, ‘Metalhorse’ retains its emotional weight, seamlessly transitioning from the laid-back, sun-soaked indie-rock charm of Gas, characterised by its jangly guitars and relaxed melodies, to the understated beauty of Strange Gift, home to delicate piano arrangements and haunting harmonies.
The journey culminates in the defiant Moon Explodes, where a powerful crescendo mirrors the exhilaration of breaking free from constraints, leaving listeners with a sense of empowerment and hope. Ultimately, 'Metalhorse' is a testament to finding resilience and even joy amid life’s lowest points, inviting listeners to join Billy Nomates on a compelling and deeply personal ride.
