Superchunk have laid out plans for a new album.
The North Carolina indie-rock stalwarts will release 'Songs in the Key of Yikes' through Merge Records on August 22, following up 2022's 'Wild Loneliness'.
Engineered by Paul Voran and Eli Webb, known for their work with The Menzingers, and Hurray For The Riff Raff, it marks the band's first full-length release to feature Laura King, following two years as the group's touring drummer. There's also contributions from Rosali Middleman, Bella Quinlan and Holly Thomas of Quivers, and touring bassist Betsy Wright. The band's Mac McCaughan commented:
"It’s always been the case that everyone is going through something that you may not be aware of. This is currently more true than ever—but also the case that we are all going through some things together. In the face of that, what good is art and where is happiness found? (Spoiler alert: I don’t know.)"
Alongside the announcement, Superchunk have shared the opening track from the record, Is It Making You Feel Something, an indie-rock offering that explores themes of emotional vulnerability. McCaughan explained:
"This song is about not second-guessing yourself in the very second-guessable process of writing words and music. It’s about the legitimate question of ‘who needs this and what is it good for?’ but also about not setting such a high bar for making art that you never get started. ‘Is it making you feel something?’ Ok, that’s a place to start."
It follows on from their March single, Bruised Lung, featuring backing vocals from Middleman, which appears on the album. Their spring 2024 single Everybody Dies is also included on the tracklist.
The band have also revealed they'll release a limited edition 7" featuring Is It Making You Feel Something on the a-side and Sirens & Lights on the b-side. The latter is a previously unreleased exclusive-to-vinyl song recorded during the album sessions. You can order it here.
They'll support their new LP with a previously scheduled North American tour that runs from September 5 to October 23. Tickets are on sale now.
