Nxdia’s ‘I Promise No One’s Watching’ is a debut mixtape full of emotion, catchy lyrics, forceful drops and genre switches — it’s experimental, certainly, but also offers the perfect payoff to each of its diversions, ending up as a real treat for fans of alt-pop contemporaries such as Towa Bird.
Feel Anything immediately seeks to get the listener off balance. It starts off slowly, with its acoustic guitars quickly followed by gritty bass rumbles and a snotty beat that many will recognise from TikTok, especially its refrain: “Don’t stop / Get a drink / Throw up in the kitchen sink.” It’s like Nxdia is releasing every bit of emotion in the most chaotic way possible — these lyrics are reckless and all too relatable for any 20-something in the current climate.
Jennifer’s Body, named after the 2009 cult classic, runs on the same tension found in the film, creating an atmosphere that may just explode at any second. Body On Me, meanwhile, is tempting and alluring with its steady bass and pared-back vocals.
She Likes A Boy opens with a reference to Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream, with Nxdia’s repetition of “I’m not a boy / I’m not a boy” in the face of their crush’s interest in “this dumb boy who likes the chase” capturing the desperation and disappointment felt in these experiences.
The song also highlights one of Nxdia’s most unique and interesting qualities — their ability to switch seamlessly between English and Arabic mid-verse, offering another insight into themselves and their influences. It really makes you want to see them perform live in order to hear this perfected dynamic in person.
Another really impressive track is More!. It kicks off with an electrifying riff that is immediately enticing, with subtle digital manipulation making it sound so fresh. As the drums join, the pressure seems to rise only until Nxdia hits the chorus — her voice here is incredibly versatile, changing from a patient tone into a powerhouse when the hook lands. One to watch.
