Barely a year ago it felt like Conan Gray had misplaced his artistic identity. But where the Max Martin-produced synth-pop of ‘Found Heaven’ felt calculating, its rapid follow up ‘Wishbone’ strips away the glossy veneer to reveal something altogether more authentic.
As much a homecoming as it is an evolution, Gray’s fourth offering in five years trades neon-drenched pop for a palette drawn from ‘90s alternative radio. While each track is far-reaching in its scope, you could think of ‘Wishbone’ as a ‘what if’ based on Beck joining The Cranberries.
Tracks like Romeo channel that blend of indie credibility and pop accessibility, while Caramel leans into chamber-pop arrangements that feel both contemporary and timelessly melancholic — the soundtrack to your favourite ‘90s rom-com.
And in an era when male pop stars have virtually vanished from mainstream consciousness — none were nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album at this year’s Grammys — Gray emerges as a vital voice for vulnerable masculinity.
This is his first album to explicitly address his sexuality, transforming personal revelation into cultural statement, while songs such as Nauseous confront attachment trauma with unflinching honesty. My World, meanwhile, playfully challenges toxic masculinity tropes.
The album’s emotional directness feels needed in today’s pop landscape. Where previous generations of male stars relied on bravado or mystique, Gray treats his vulnerability as a strength. His willingness to excavate uncomfortable truths about queer love and mental health creates space for a new model of stardom— one where sensitivity isn’t seen as a weakness.
