Nova Twins - Parasites & Butterflies (Album Review)

Nova Twins have certainly been living up to their name. With the one-two of their 2020 debut album ‘Who Are The Girls?’ and the ensuing ‘Supernova’ accompanied by some massive live shows, vocalist-guitarist Amy Love and bassist Georgia South have been burning bright. But the duo’s third album ‘Parasites & Butterflies’ dims their light a little.
It kicks into gear in typical Nova Twins fashion on the electric Glory, a well-paced and multi-faceted number that shows off the duo’s chemistry and chops, before Piranha and Monster follow, packed full of attitude and earworm hooks. Soprano, too, lands as a compelling and tantalising display of force.
But there’s a mid-album dip that stretches from the repetitive Drip all the way to Parallel Universe, adding up to Nova Twins by numbers.
Sandman is a messy mash of genres that sounds ready to fall off the rails at any second, while N.O.V.A sounds like it pre-dates their debut and winds up being an uninspired slog, complete with an obvious, even cloying, desire to be sung back in full voice.
‘Parasites & Butterflies’ is a short album, racing through its 12 tracks packed into a 32 minute runtime, but to have a good third of it feeling like offcuts sours the experience somewhat. Fortunately, it is punctuated by album highlight Hummingbird, which is Nova Twins at their most imaginative, soulful and rousing.
They also end on a high with a closing run of Hide & Seek, Hurricane and Black Roses, three tracks that sound completely fresh but also undeniably Nova Twins. In a rare adherence to rock cliche, they have stretched out what could have been an outstanding EP into a quite good album.
