Spirit Of Your Friend was unearthed from the Manchester trio's studio archives, and was originally written during sessions for the band's 2009 album 'Kingdom Of Rust'. The song serves up their signature atmospheric and cinematic sound, led by the distinctive tones of bassist-vocalist Jimi Goodwin. Multi-instrumentalist and current live frontman, Jez Williams explained:
"I had a bad dose of writer’s block way back in 2005 and turned to the music immersion method to dig myself out. Spirit Of Your Friend was born out of that and, at the heart of it, my aim was to bring out a sense of yearning, really amp that up both musically and lyrically. We were really surprised to find it before getting to work on pulling together the compilation’s running order, but it needed more work to get it down from its original seven minutes. It’s about friends we have lost and those we’re grateful are still with us."
The song will appear on their upcoming 'Best Of' career-spanning compilation album, 'So, Here We Are: Best Of Doves', due out on November 14. More on that here.
Fresh from several summer festival sets and outdoor shows, Doves will play six UK shows in December. The band will again be fronted by Jez and drummer-vocalist Andy Williams without Goodwin, who continues to stay off the road for health reasons. Tickets are on sale now.
Doves released their sixth studio album, 'Constellations For The Lonely', back in February, which was followed by a deluxe edition in July.
