New Project From Refused Members Backengrillen Announce Eponymous Debut Album

Tuesday, 11 November 2025 Written by Jon Stickler

Backengrillen, a new side-project from three out of four members of Refused, have announced their eponymous debut album.

Out on January 23 via Svart Records, the record teams vocalist Dennis Lyxzén, bassist Magnus Flagge and drummer David Sandström with saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, known for his work with Sonic Youth and Four Tet's Kieran Hebden, among others.

As a preview, the Swedish four-piece have shared the project's 10-minute opening track, A Hate Inferior, which serves up a wild fusion of noise-rock riffs, doom-metal, experimental jazz, and raw punk energy. Posting on Bandcamp, the band wrote:

"Backengrillens music is a paean to chaos and destruction. The basic idea is to take a death/doom metal, or noiserock riff and play it until it loses meaning and then break it apart like a ravenous cat would a tiny forest mouse. It's filled to the brim with the self-hatred endemic to the province of Västerbotten from whence the member’s hail. The record was written on a Thursday during their first ever rehearsal, performed live on a Friday and recorded on a Saturday, so what you're hearing is raw, stupid, gut instinct music played by seasoned purveyors of hardcore punk, metal, free jazz, noise et cetera.

"Record no 2 is in the making, less stupid, more ugly. Stay tuned and fuck the pigs."

Late last year, Refused announced they were calling it a day following a farewell tour billed as Refused Are F**cking Dead, And This Time They Really Mean It, which has spanned North America, Europe, and the UK throughout 2025, with dates scheduled in Australia and Sweden next month. Head here for details.

Formed in the early '90s, the hardcore band are best known for their 1998 album 'The Shape Of Punk To Come'. They split soon after its release, but reunited in 2012, releasing their fourth album 'Freedom' in 2015 and its follow-up, 'War Music', in 2019.

Refused's last original release was 'The Malignant Fire' EP in 2020, though last year they did put out the LP 'The Shape of Punk to Come Obliterated', which features tracks from the original album covered by artists such as Cold Cave, Igorrr, Fucked Up, Ho99o9 and Brutus, among others.

'Backengrillen' tracklist:

1. A Hate Inferior
2. Dör för långsamt
3. Repeater II
4. Backengrillen
5. Socialism or Barbarism
