Harry Styles will curate this year's Meltdown Festival.
Now in its 31st edition, the event will return to London's Southbank Centre for 11 days between June 11 and 21, with the Grammy-winning British superstar overseeing the programme of music and arts events as part of a major celebration marking the venue's 75th anniversary. Styles said:
"I’m deeply honoured to curate the Meltdown festival, especially for the Southbank Centre’s 75th anniversary year. My goal as the curator is to share the music and art that I love, and to celebrate the rich history of the venue. We both share a passionate belief that music is a vital part of life. It brings us together and the Southbank Centre has been at the heart of it, providing easy access to great music for the past 75 years. I’m incredibly grateful to Southbank for having me, it’s really exciting for me to have this opportunity in such an iconic venue.”
Along with a headline show by Styles, Meltdown will also feature free interactive events for young people across the UK, with the full line-up as well as ticket details to be revealed in the spring.
Last year's Little Simz-helmed event included performances from The Streets, Mahalia, Lola Young, Ghetts, Tiwa Savage, James Blake, and John Batiste, among others. Previous Meltdown curators also include Chaka Khan, Grace Jones, David Byrne, Yoko Ono, Nile Rodgers, M.I.A., David Bowie and Patti Smith.
Artistic Director of the Southbank Centre, Mark Ball commented: "Harry Styles is an iconic British artist with a global influence whose impact extends across artistic disciplines, generations and borders. We are thrilled and excited that Harry Styles’ Meltdown sits at the heart of a 75th anniversary year that champions young people, their curiosity and creative freedom.
"Throughout our 75-year history, the Southbank Centre has existed to give our greatest artists a platform to take creative risks and present work that pushes contemporary culture into new and unexpected directions. Harry Styles’ Meltdown feels like a natural expression of what the Southbank Centre exists to do, and we are delighted to become his creative playground in our anniversary year."
Jane Beese, Head of Contemporary Music at the Southbank Centre, shared: “It’s a real privilege to welcome an artist with the cultural impact and presence of Harry Styles as curator of Meltdown in our 75th anniversary year at the Southbank Centre. His openness, warmth and instinct for collaboration feel perfectly aligned with the spirit at the heart of the festival. We’re excited to see his vision play out across the whole site, creating space for connection, discovery and joy, and inviting audiences into a Meltdown that reflects the breadth, playfulness and generosity of his artistic world."
The announcement comes ahead of Styles' fourth album, 'Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally', which is due out on March 6. So far, he's only shared its lead single, Aperture.
He'll support the album with the Together, Together Tour, which includes a staggering 12 nights at London's Wembley Stadium in June and July, and 30 shows at Madison Square Garden in New York between August and October. He also has multiple shows lined up in Amsterdam, Melbourne, Sydney, São Paulo and Mexico City.
Before the tour begins, the former One Direction star will play a special show at Manchester's Co-op Live on the record's release day, where he'll perform it in full. Get further details here.
He'll also perform at the Co-op Live on February 28 for this year's BRIT Awards, alongside Rosalía, Olivia Dean, Wolf Alice and Mark Ronson, with EJAE, Audrey Nuna and REI AMI (the singing voices of HUNTR/X from Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters) performing a special set earlier in the day.
Ronson was recently announced as the recipient of the BRIT Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. Earlier this month, Noel Gallagher was named this year's BRITs Songwriter Of The Year, and Jacob Alon won the BRITs Critics' Choice Award in January, the same month nominations were announced.
In related news, the BRITs Week for War Child series kicked off last week with Fatboy Slim playing Newcastle's Boiler Shop, joined by Max Jones. Other acts set to play intimate venues in the lead up to the BRIT Awards include Lambrini Girls and Bimini, Spiritualized, The K's, Myles Smith and Saint Raymont, Jack Savoretti and Katherine Jenkins with Gabriella Cilmi, Kwn with support from CARI, Josh Baker with Deliah and Alexandria, Olivia Dean, and Rossi with Olive F. Jacob Alon and Robbie Williams will wrap up the week with performances in Edinburgh and Manchester, respectively, on February 27. Head here for more details.
Tickets for those dates are on sale now. Fans can also donate £10 to War Child here to enter a prize draw for the chance to win tickets to a show of their choice.
