Long-time Motörhead guitarist and Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons founder Phil Campbell has died aged 64.
The news was announced earlier today (March 14) in a statement posted to the official social media pages of Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons, the group he played in alongside his sons Todd, Dane and Tyla:
"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Philip Anthony Campbell, who passed away peacefully last night following a long and courageous battle in intensive care after a complex major operation.
Phil was a devoted husband, a wonderful father, and a proud and loving grandfather, known affectionately as “Bampi.” He was deeply loved by all who knew him and will be missed immensely. His legacy, music and the memories he created with so many will live on forever.
We kindly ask that our family’s privacy is respected during this incredibly difficult time."
Last month, Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons announced that they would be cancelling their shows in Australia and Europe between March and May due to medical advice Campbell had received, though no further details were shared.
Born in Pontypridd in 1961, Campbell was best known as the long-time guitarist for Motörhead, playing with the band from 1984 until its final days in 2015, after the death of legendary frontman Lemmy Kilmister. For the final two decades of the group's career, Campbell was the band's sole guitarist after Würzel left in 1995, performing on albums such as 'Orgasmatron', '1916' and 'Bastards'.
Before joining Motörhead, Campbell co-founded the heavy metal band Persian Risk in 1979 and played on the early singles Calling For You and Ridin' High.
In 2019, he released his debut solo album, 'Old Lions Still Roar', featuring a cast of rock and metal royalty including Rob Halford of Judas Priest and Dee Snider of Twisted Sister.
Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons put out their third album, 'Kings Of The Asylum', in 2023, following up 2020's 'We're The Bastards'.
