Detroit Social Club - Existence (Album Review)

Existence is the debut album from Detroit Social Club, it is an indie anthem filled ten track record which impresses from start to finish. After already supporting some great acts and with some fantastic festival sets coming up, there is no doubt that this group have big things ahead of them.

There are some fantastic influences in the medley from the psychedelic experimentation of Kasabian to the wonderful vocal talents of Kelly Jones from The Stereophonics, hints of The Verve, Melodic talents of Primal Scream and Rock and Roll attitude of The Rolling Stones.

The drumming is aggressive and hard hitting, the bass warm and the guitar riffs and melodies fantastic, there is experimentation with effects and other instruments and front man David Burns’s incredible vocal talent. A wonderful medley of indie, pop, rock and roll, funk and soul that are sure to set many a festival alight this summer.

Image'Kiss The Sun', a track taken from the groups EP, “Kiss The Sun” it is an anthem, full of aggressive drums, swooping guitar riffs and impressive vocals, it’s a hard hitting track, full of attitude, which is sure to be a hit with live audiences. The track builds and builds with heavy instruments and crashes of effects before it kicks into a huge indie anthem full of attitude and soul.

'Northern Man', is a soul filled track, softer then the last with gentle percussion, soft guitar melodies and gorgeous violins, there is a lovely crack and gentleness in David Burns’s vocals as this track grows into another anthem.

'Black & White', is a great rock and roll track, loads of blues and soul and a definite hint of The Rolling Stones in there with more strong vocals and a lovely, gentle rhythm of guitar and drums, which midway experiments and takes a heavier direction as the drums are punched forward a notch and the guitars earlier melodies become heavier riffs, backed up by effects and feedback, turning a rock and roll track into a heavier medley with doses of electronic effects thrown in.

'Chemistry', is an atmospheric sing-a-long, which is another track with anthem written all over it. Heavy drumming and metal riffs, with simple chanted vocals, create an infectious summer tune, sure to be a festival winner. The tempo and volume changes are brilliant and the crack in Burns’ fantastic voice is back with brilliant effect.

'Sunshine People', another winner mixing heavy guitar riffs, skin rippling drumming and warm bass, which set a great rock platform for the vocals to deliver the simple lyrics very well indeed; there is a hint of The Verve and Primal Scream in here. This track is upbeat and funky with huge guitar solos and effects at the end.

'Rivers and Rainbows', more excellent drumming and riffs followed by excellent vocals, there is a huge vocal range in use here, add to that, the backing vocals and echo and we have another brilliant track. The musical experimentation towards the end adds another twist as this group push the musical boundaries.

Image'Silver', is a funky mix of upbeat drums and keyboards with David Burn’s heavily affected voice, which is again echoed. This is a different direction then the other tracks on the album, as you are taking on a psychedelic mix of rock, funk and soul.

'Prophecy', is the first single from the album and it is easy to see why, the musical experimentation and chants at the beginning, sow the seeds for this wonderfully upbeat track, the drumming is again, top class, setting a great rhythm and the guitar riffs are equally as good, but Burns voice explodes, he hits massive heights as he delivers the catchy lyrics with amazing power at each chorus which sets up another brilliant anthem.

'Universe', begins with organs and keyboards, slow drumming and warm bass, a real heady mix of intoxicating psychedelia, before more brilliance from Burns’ vocal talents. There is a great attitude in his voice over this musical experimental track and that lovely crack occasionally. The drums and heavily effected guitars come to life at the end of the track and there is again a hint of influence from The Verve in there.

'Lights Of Life', is a warm track, blasts of drum skin, soft organ keys, and a subtle gentleness in the amazing rock vocals, Burns' vocal range is not unlike that of Kelly Jones from The Stereophonics. Occasional guitar riffs add depth here and there while the drums soften, but raise the tempo.

This album is a sure fire winner, filled with huge tracks from start to finish, it’s a sing-a-long, dance-a-long mix of musical excellence, vocal brilliance and lyrical simplicity. A fantastic album full of singles, from a group who are sure to really make a name for themselves following a busy summer of festival appearances.

Stereoboard Rating. 9/10.
