Les Negresses Vertes are a French world music and alternative rock group formed in Paris in 1987. Their tracks often feature acoustic guitar and accordion, with some containing other traditional instruments such as piano and brass, all with an upbeat energy and enthusiasm.
The original line-up was a group of friends including singer Helno, Jo Roz, Stéfane Mellino, Jean-Marie Paulus, Gaby, Matthias Canavese, Michel Ochowiak, Abraham Sirinix, and Iza Mellino. Their name translates as Green Negresses, arising from abuse the band received at one of their early concerts.
The group was initially signed to the independent Off the Track label and released the punk protest song 200 Ans D'Hypocrisie in response to its home country's French Revolution bicentennial celebrations. In 1989, they released their first album, 'Mlah', to good reviews in both France and the UK. Its follow up was 'Famille nombreuse' in 1991. After this release, Helno was struggling with a heroin addiction, and main songwriting duties were taken over by the others until he died in 1993.
The band continued to make music, releasing a handful of albums and compilations throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Their altest was 2006's 'À l’Affiche'.
Les Negresses Vertes will bring their MLAH Tour to the UK this autumn, celebrating 30 years since the record's release. Catch them live by checking out the tour dates and cocnert ticket information below on Stereoboard.
