Toots and the Maytals were a reggae band from Maypen, Jamaica, consisting of Fredrick "Toots" Hibbert, Paul Douglas, Jackie Jackson, Carl Harvey, Dougie Bryan, Charles Farquharson, Leba Thomas and Gwen Jackson.
Formed in 1963, they released their debut album ‘Never Grow Old’ in 1964 and are well known for songs such as Pressure Drop, 54-46 (That’s My Number) and Monkey Man. To date, they have put out a further 19 studio albums alongside compilations and live albums. Notably, in 2007, they released ‘Light Your Light’ which led to them being nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.
They were key figures in popularising reggae music; their 1968 single Do the Reggay was the first song to use the word "reggae", naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience.
The band headlined many of their own shows and tours across the world.
On September 12, 2020, frontman Fredrick "Toots" Hibert passed away at age 78 from health complications related to the coronavirus pandemic.
