Yasiin Bey, born Dante Terrell Smith, is an American hip hop rapper and actor from Brooklyn, New York City.
Starting his music career in 1994, under the name Mos Def, as part of UTD, the group released the album, ‘Manifest Destiny’ in 2004. He went on to form Black Star with Talib Kweli, releasing the album, ‘Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star’ in 1998. He released his debut solo album, ‘Black on Both Sides’ in 1999 via Rawkus, before signing to Geffen and releasing ‘The New Danger’ in 2004, and ‘True Magic’ in 2006. ‘The Ecstatic’ came out in 2007 via Downtown. He has also appeared in films such as ‘Monster’s Ball’, ‘Be Kind Rewind’ and ‘Cadillac Records’.
He has headlined his own shows and tours across the world including three shows in the UK in 2014 celebrating the 15th anniversary of his debut feature-length ‘Black on Both Sides’.
