The race for Christmas Number One has now officially begun with downloads of Rage Against the Machine’s ‘Killing in the Name’ now eligible for next Sunday’s Christmas chart. Only time will tell whether Rage have a chance of beating the X Factor winner’s single, after an internet campaign on social networking site, Facebook, urged music lovers to download the protest anthem in reaction to Simon Cowell’s year-in-year-out rubbish dominating the festive charts.

The excited atmosphere churned up by such an event was striking and being that this was the first night of a six date tour of the UK, it made things even more special. R.I.P 'Dimebag' Darrell Abbott - 5th Anniversary
It was today, December 8th, five years ago that one of the greatest ever metal guitarists, former Pantera axe man, “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott was killed by a deranged fan while onstage gigging in Ohio with Damageplan. He was 38. “He was next in line after Eddie Van Halen,” says Scott Ian, Anthrax guitarist. Korn frontman, Jonathan Davies, claims “He was one of the last three great traditional metal guitarists.” To quote here just two tributes from fellow artists, sums up the legend that Dimebag leaves behind.

Altamont Festival: 40 Years On
Sunday December 6th will mark the 40th anniversary of an event that has commonly been dubbed as “Rock & Roll’s Worst Day”. The Altamont Speedway Free Festival in California took place just four months after the huge success of Woodstock although Altamont resulted in the complete opposite of “peace and love.” Also hailed as being “Woodstock West,” what started out as a great idea has been best remembered as an event marred by violence and death.
