Cardiff Barfly Closes Doors After 10 Years

Welsh live music chain venue Cardiff Barfly has closed after almost a decade of hosting intimate performances from some big-name artists.

It seems that the recession still has its claws tightly gripped around the UK. With live music now under threat from the knock-on effect of people having less money to spend, the support for unsigned and unknown acts is growing thinner by the day.

As well as having less money in our pockets, another reason threatening the closure of gig venues is noise regulations. With local authorities clamping down on noise pollution levels across the country, live music venues are faced with the difficult and often expensive job of ensuring their acoustics are up to scratch. An example of this can be seen with the 2008 loss of Cardiff’s The Point. The Cardiff Bay venue was forced to shut their doors two years ago after spending huge amounts of money on soundproofing. That, along with the money lost while the The Point was closed during the soundproofing work, resulted in the permanent closure of what was a superb venue.

Now Cardiff’s Barfly has become the next casualty of the Welsh capital’s declining live music scene. Closing only yesterday a sign on the door confirms that the venue is to remain closed for the foreseeable future. Having hosted concerts for nearly 10 years Cardiff Barfly has seen huge stars such as The Libertines, Interpol, The Killers and Super Furry Animals tread the boards of its intimate stage.

Reports have been circulating that the closure is part of a proposed HMV takeover of the Mama Group, the company that used to own the Barfly chain. However, so far the Mama Group are yet to give up their license for the venue opposite the castle with a spokesman for Mama explaining, “We hope to make an announcement regarding its (Barfly) future shortly.”

Since the announcement of the closure, music fans have been bombarding social networking sites such as Twitter with messages of support for the venue to be reopened. A Facebook group calling itself ‘Reopen Cardiff Barfly!’ has been set-up with almost 100 members backing the online campaign already.

Stereoboard will bring you more news about the future of the popular venue as soon as we can.
