Damon Albarn Rules Out ‘Glee’ Appearance

Monday, 18 October 2010 Written by James Conlon

Damon Albarn has recently joined the ranks of musicians who have criticised hit US television show, ‘Glee’.

The Gorillaz and Blur frontman revealed in an interview this week that he would not allow his music to be used on the show. For those few people that aren’t aware of ‘Glee’, the show is a drama centred around a teenage vocal group who sing...a lot. In recent episodes, a particular musical act is the theme for each week and their songs are given the choir-based ‘Glee’ treatment. Acts to have taken part include Britney Spears, Madonna, Paramore and Journey.

Speaking on the possibility of contributing his music towards the hit show, Albarn recently admitted: "We wouldn't let that happen, and not that they have asked us because they haven't, and now they definitely won't." He went on to declare that shows such as Glee offer "a poor substitute for the real thing".

The popularity of Glee has had a profound effect on record sales: the cast recently surpassed the Beatles' record for most appearances on the Billboard Hot 100 by a non-solo act. Only Elvis Presley and James Brown still have more hit singles than the cast.

Despite this impressive record, Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn was still unimpressed: "Those songs won't last like the Beatles by any stretch of the imagination. They'll be forgotten in a few years' time." Albarn joins the likes of Kings Of Leon and others who have recently hit out against the hit show.

Gorillaz last week premiered a new song, entitled 'Doncamatic (All Played Out)'. The track, which does not feature on any current studio release from the band, will be released on November 22nd:
