Sleigh Bells - Infinity Guitars (Single Review)

It's not a huge surprise that Brooklyn based duo Sleigh Bells aren't a household name. Signed to Mom + Pop Music, an independent label based in New York, Derek E. Miller and Alexis Krauss have only been making music together for two years. Having only previously released a handful of tunes online, it's about time that the band start to get some recognition from their soon to be adoring public.

Hitting the road supporting acts such as LCD Soundsystem and MIA should give you some indication of Sleigh Bells’ sound. They describe themselves as a combination of noise-pop and dance-punk. Quite the random mixture, but one that definitely seems to work for them.

'Infinity Guitars' is the second single release from Sleigh Bells' debut album, 'Treats', and appears to be the first to gain some radio airtime. Already played and raved about by Zane Lowe and Edith Bowman on Radio 1, this could be the track to thrust the band into the mainstream - or at least have their name on the tip of some music loving tongues.

ImageAt just over 2mins 30secs long, 'Infinity Guitars' still manages to build itself into a crescendo of epic proportions. Almost as a nod to the creepy faceless cheerleaders that grace the cover of 'Treats', the song starts off like a high school cheerleading chant - of course in this case the cheerleading squad would have to be made up of the most confident, arrogant, and utterly cool versions of the likes of Karen O, Brody Dalle and Alison Mosshart at their very best....and you know that sounds like a winning combination! With momentum built, and with little more than 30 seconds left, the song changes tide. It sounds like Miller let rip on the mixing board, playing with levels, volume, bass, and whatever else he could get his hands on. The sound switches from quiet to loud, between bass and treble heavy, finishing in a mash of guitars and drums.

The mention of Karen O isn't the end of the comparison as this Sleigh Bells tune makes them sound like they could've gone to the same rock school as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. A similar catchy, tight sound which can only be described as full, executed perfectly with that sprinkling of black eyeliner-clad chick rock vocal. Alexis Krauss delivers that vocal in a way which is nothing short of agressive and menacing, and that's exactly what makes this song so good. 'Infinity Guitars' is loud, it’s in your face and it wants to imprint itself on your ear drums. A wall of noise? Yes. Addictive? Hell yes. A definite hit, and a definite band to keep an eye on.

'Infinity Guitars' is available to buy and download from 8th November. Sleigh Bells’ debut album, 'Treats', is available now.
