Kyuss Lives – Stereoboard Tour of the Week

Wednesday, 10 November 2010 Written by Rob Sleigh

Following our previous Tour of the Week, which was awarded to Dave Grohl’s Foo Fighters, it appears that another group of Josh Homme’s former bandmates are in the process of getting back to what they do best. This time around, it’s the band he first found fame with – Kyuss.

After years of speculation, the original desert rockers are finally getting back together and, somewhat unsurprisingly, Homme won’t be joining his former colleagues. The QOTSA frontman, who played guitar for Kyuss from their inception in 1990 until their split five years later, has stated on numerous occasions that he is not interested in a reunion and it would seem that he has stuck to his word. However, the other three original members – vocalist John Garcia, drummer Brant Bjork and bassist Nick Oliveri, who many people will know as a former member of Queens of the Stone Age – have all agreed to the reformation under the name Kyuss Lives.

ImageFormer Kyuss bassist Scott Reeder, who joined the band following Oliveri’s departure in 1992 and played on their last two albums, had previously expressed an interest in a reunion. However, he has apparently been excluded from the new line-up. Taking up guitar duties in Josh Homme’s absence is Bruno Fevery who, despite never being a member of the band in the past, recently toured with John Garcia for his Garcia Plays Kyuss shows. In fact, it was during that very tour in June this year that the idea for Kyuss Lives came to be.

Nick Oliveri and Brant Bjork joined Garcia and Fevery on stage at Hellfest in France to play a number of classic Kyuss tracks, much to the delight of the crowd. Talking about that reunion, Garcia said: “The whole reason I ever considered doing this with Brant and Nick was the feeling we all shared during Hellfest this year. To be able to play with such amazing musicians again is a dream come true for me.”

Californian rockers Kyuss, who were named after a character in Dungeons and Dragons, released four albums during their brief existence as a band. Their second album ‘Blues for the Red Sun’ was credited with pioneering the stoner rock sound, a very slow, low and heavy form of metal that was mixed with elements of psychedelic rock. Stoner rock later became a popular term to describe the music of bands like Fu Manchu and Monster Magnet.

Following the band’s break-up, Homme went on to form Queens of the Stone Age and was later joined by his former bandmate Oliveri. John Garcia formed the stoner rock bands Slo Burn, Unida and Hermano and is currently working on a solo album entitled ‘Garcia vs. Garcia’. Brant Bjork has since played with Fu Manchu and Nick Oliveri’s band Mondo Generator, which was also the name of a Kyuss song on ‘Blues for the Red Sun’.

Despite Josh Homme’s refusal to rejoin his former bandmates, Kyuss Lives has already managed to create a suitable amount of noise following the announcement. Tickets for the gigs have been moving at an impressive rate and the band have already followed up the news with a second London date. Going by Kyuss’s previous reputation, we should be able to expect a similar amount of noise when the reunion tour hits UK venues next year. “Oh Yeah!”
