The Chakras - We The People (Single Review)

There are a few tips to making a great song:

One: you need a killer hook.

Two: you need a memorable chorus.

Three: you need clever, thought-provoking lyrics.

Four: More cowbell.

This song has three of the four in abundance (it could use more cowbell though) and has instantly shot up in my imaginary and wholly unwritten list of utterly amazing songs of 2011 so far. This musically sounds a little bit 'She Bangs the Drums' before the Cooper Temple Clause got their hands on it and blew it to pieces, and then when the chorus blasts into your ears, they take you on a supersonic journey the likes of which may actually send you spinning into oblivion. The rasping, hoarse vocals from lead singer Rocky are not for everyone and took a couple of listens for me to get used to, but when he uses his voice to full effect, he encapsulates that emotive wail that made JJ72 a great (and wholly underestimated) band, but with an better sense of tune.

Is it perfect? No. There’s no such thing, but The Chakras haven’t been around for long whatsoever, but if this is what they can do on their first outing, I can’t wait to hear what’s next. Pinpointing certain elements of the trance, indie-rock, and electro pop scenes and mashing them all together has created a wonderful, soaring, ambitiously loud sound that they must surely be proud of. Apparently, from what I have read, this storming track just simply “means business”, and I don’t care what business it’s involved in, I’d buy shares in it.

Put simply. Take everything that makes a song good. Stick it on a CD. Let the world hear it. It’s such a simple prospect so many bands fail to get right. However, that’s exactly what the Chakras have done. Now they want you to listen, and listen you must.
