Slaves To Gravity - UNDERWATEROUTERSPACE (Album Review)

Hailed as one of Britain’s best upand coming bands in the last couple of years, Slaves To Gravity have had a lot of support over their musical course. Having said that, I must admit that I entered the review process of their latest offering, ‘Underwaterouterspace’, with a high level of scepticism. Not being overwhelmingly grabbed by them over the years I had seen and heard them, I decided this was the chance to give them another try – and I found myself pleasantly surprised.

With all guns blazing the band tackle their first string of songs with no sign of letting up. Teaming big riffs and catchy choruses, the band have seemingly created an array of stadium-rock tracks, some almost anthemic (‘Honesty’) and some with a more aggressive streak (‘Good Advice’).

ImageThere’s an undeniable addictive element within certain tracks, ‘Dumb’ being a prime example. Upbeat guitars and vocals lure you into a subliminal sense of head-bobbing, big choruses get jammed in your head and there’s always that constant undertone of a heavier riff to draw you back. ‘Youth Serrated’ appears to be one of the more diverse tracks presented, flitting seamlessly between a heavier rock sound and acoustic, country-esqué vibe throughout.

A personal favourite, ‘Lily Liver’, is the epitome of the dirty rock sound Slaves To Gravity appear to be striving for. A very riff-heavy track, the band easily mixes their need for a sleek, catchy chorus into the album’s longest track, throwing in smooth guitar solos and a drum beat that caused Disturbed to spring to mind, for me at least.

Going in a critic, these 47 minutes have altered my view of Slaves To Gravity. Although some tracks weren’t up to par in comparison to others, they have managed to create an array of riff-heavy and catchy songs that, for me at least, were enough to satisfy my need for guitar-fuelled, catchy music right now. With strong vocals and solid songs below their belt, ‘Underwaterouterspace’ is definitely an album worth a listen.
