Barclaycard Mercury Prize 2011 Nominations to be Streamed Live Tomorrow

The nominations for this year’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize are to be announced tomorrow (Tuesday 19th July) and will be streamed live from Barclaycard’s Facebook page from 11.30am. The announcement will be made by presenter and broadcaster Lauren Laverne and will be hosted by The Hospital Club in Covent Garden.

The overall winner of the 2011 Barclaycard Mercury Prize will be decided and revealed on the night of the awards show, which will be broadcast live on BBC2 on Tuesday 6th September. Lauren Laverne will also be presenting the programme, while the ceremony itself is to be hosted by Jools Holland.

Tomorrow’s announcement will confirm this year’s shortlisted nominees, including 12 albums released by UK artists between July 2010 and July 2011. The 12 lucky artists will be chosen by an independent judging panel.

Speaking about tomorrow’s announcement, Lauren Laverne said: “There’s been so much great music released this year. I’m sure the judges will have an even more challenging job than usual choosing the final shortlist of 12 Albums of the Year. It certainly looks like it should be a really strong line-up.”

The 2010 Barclaycard Mercury Prize was awarded to The xx (pictured) for their eponymous debut album. Since its inception in 1992, when Primal Scream took home the award for ‘Screamadelica’, the Mercury Prize has built up a reputation as one of the country’s most important awards for highlighting new and emerging talent. One notable example occurred in 2003, when Dizzee Rascal – largely unheard of, at the time – was awarded the prize for his debut ‘Boy In Da Corner’ instead of favourites Coldplay. They have also been accused in the past of making some rather controversial decisions, such as in 1997, when Radiohead’s ‘OK Computer’ was beaten by Roni Size with ‘New Forms’

To watch the live video stream of the nominations, go to Barclaycard’s Facebook page from 11.30am on Tuesday 19th July. For more information, you can also visit the Barclaycard Mercury Prize Twitter page.

Let us know who you think should be nominated for this year’s prize and what you make of the nominees following Tuesday’s announcement.
