Hip-Hop Star Heavy D Dies Age 44

Los Angeles rapper Heavy D sadly passed away last night due to unknown circumstances.

The hip-hop star, real name Dwayne Arrington Myers, fronted the rap collective Heavy D and the Boyz, which included names like Eddie F, G-Whiz and ‘Trouble’ T. Roy, who released their first studio album back in 1987. Heavy D continued to put out albums, be it with the Boyz or without, and put out his ninth studio album in September earlier this year.

Weighing in at 250 pounds, Heavy D’s weight was something that always played a part in his sound and career – clearly influencing even his choice of name. By combining your typical rap and hip-hop lyrics with comedic digs at his own appearance, he made his name in the game with albums like ‘Living Large’ and ‘Big Tyme’, and charted highly with singles like ‘Big Daddy’ and the eponymous ‘Big Tyme’. It’s unknown whether his weight may have played a part in his premature and tragic death.

The rapper became less and less of a hip-hop star as the 90s progressed and success of the genre slowed, and he turned to acting, appearing in many films and television programmes including the recently released ‘Tower Heist’, which features Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller, as well as TV programmes like ‘Bones’ and ‘Law and Order’.

Stereoboard will fill you in with Heavy D’s cause of death when it’s been determined.
