New Slayer Album Near Completion, Confirms Drummer Dave Lombardo

Dave Lombardo, drummer of thrash metal titans Slayer, has updated fans on the progress of their new album – revealing that the band have completed nine new tracks for the record.

The legendary metalheads, who are in the 33rd year of their career, have been working on what will be their 12th studio album since November last year – but fans won’t have much longer to wait until it hits shelves.

Speaking to Metal Hammer, Lombardo said: “[We’re] writing new music. Kerry [King, guitar] and I are writing new material. We have nine songs and everything’s moving forward,” with the drummer adding that “traditional fans will be pacified and non-traditional fans will be like, ‘Again?’”

When asked how long it would be until the album saw a release, the sticksman replied: “I don’t know, but we’re going to do a three- or four-song EP to keep the fans pacified until we come out with the full-length record. Kind of like what we did with ‘Psychopathy Red’, which was like a two-song 45.”

And if that wasn’t enough for Slayer fans, Lombardo also updated us on his new side project Philm, which will see the star reverting from all-out, double-bass pedal-ing madness to a four-piece drum kit, where he’ll be playing classic rock style material alongside a bassist and a singing guitarist.

He told the magazine: “I have a new album coming out May 15. The band’s called Philm. It’s my first production — I actually produced it and I’m really excited. It’s very old school. Very reminiscent of the old Cream, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix style of playing.

“I play a four-piece drum set, instead of the big double bass kit, with a single pedal instead of the double pedal. And it’s a trio–bass player and guitar player who sings. It’s fifteen songs, there’s improvising, there’s very moody soundscape stuff, and some very heavy songs but yet very bluesy songs. It’s very diverse and very different. And it doesn’t have any ‘Pro Tools paralysis.’”

Slayer have a one-off show in London’s Alexandra Palace lined-up for May 25th. If you’re a fan, check the link below to find tickets.
