Motorhead Cancel European Summer Dates Due To Lemmy's Health

Tuesday, 02 July 2013 Written by Jon Stickler

Motorhead have been forced to cancel their remaining summer European tour dates due to Lemmy's recent health struggles. The band, who will now return home to take some time out, hope to be back on top form for their forthcoming autumn UK dates in November.

Lemmy's recent bad health has stemmed from a hematoma that the iconic frontman suffered last month, forcing the band to cancel a handful of shows. In addition to the hematoma, it was reported that Lemmy had been fitted with an implantable defribrillator earlier this year, although that procedure has not been confirmed by the band. Doctors have since urged Lemmy to cancel any remaining shows in order to recover.

Speaking to Swedish newspapers GT.se and Aftonbladet, Motorhead drummer Mikkey Dee gave the following update: “The doctors in Berlin are recommending that he rests for another couple of weeks. We can’t keep cancelling show after show, it’s too costly. Therefore we unfortunately have to cancel the entire tour. There will be an official announcement regarding his health shortly."

He told Aftonbladet: "He needs to have his body drained of fluid and that can’t be done too quickly. When he remains in bed and can’t move, he can easily get pneumonia…If you can’t move properly, other issues will follow. He is devastated beyond belief. It has a bigger effect on him than it would anyone else. It’s like chopping off a piano player’s hands. This is his life.

“I am worried because he’s not doing so well right now. But he’s improving, even though it takes longer for him than anyone else to become well. Now that the doctors feel that he shouldn’t go out an play you’ll just have to accept that order.”

Motorhead hope to be back doing what they do best very soon. With new album 'Aftershock' due out this September, Dee revealed that the band will head home and prepare for their huge autumn tour. "Our buses, trucks roll home in the afternoon. We will focus on the upcoming album and our big European tour in the fall."

Stereoboard would like to wish Lemmy a speedy recovery with hopes of seeing him back on stage soon!
