Editors - In Dream (Album Review)

Thursday, 08 October 2015 Written by Jennifer Geddes

On their fifth album, 'In Dream', Editors don’t stray too far from the formula of melancholy and minor chords that made their name but, 10 years on from their debut, ‘The Back Room’, it remains clear that they aren't quite the same band anymore.

With a return to the electronic-influenced sound of 'In This Light And On This Evening', the album pushes the envelope even further, keeping the indie-rock anthems to a minimum. Ocean of Night is a notable exception and, with its traditional piano riff, a kind nod to the band’s past.

Having tucked themselves away at the isolated Crear, on the west coast of Scotland, and produced the album themselves, the band managed to blot out any preconceptions of what Editors are expected to sound like.

This has resulted in a record that draws heavily on the influence of Depeche Mode and Gary Numan, an element further emphasised by the accompanying artwork and videos, created by Dutch artist Rahi Rezvani. Its songs build slowly, sparsely and subtly, never hitting anthemic heights, rather focusing on rhythmic intricacy, heavy synth sounds and dark, ambiguous lyrics.

The album’s opening track, No Harm, sums up its intentions. Tom Smith’s deep, montone call, “I’m a go-getta”, is unnervingly combined with sporadic synthesised drums and very little else.

Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell contributes backing vocals to many of the songs here, but most notably duets with Smith on The Law, which switches between her sweet vocals and his deep tones, backed by synth and prominent bass notes. It’s emblematic of an album that explores the darker side of electronica in a modern way.

Smith has spoken of his desire to make albums that sound “both pop and experimental” and while ‘In Dream’ does broadly achieve this aim, it is not a commercial album at all. It’s hard to pull out any tracks as particular highlights, and as such it’s hard to get particularly excited about it.
